Island Excellence Toastmasters is hosting a very special event tomorrow night. We've had posters up around town, told all our friends, invited fellow Toastmasters, spread the word on Facebook and now, tomorrow is the Big Day! So, why should you make the time and effort to come and join us on a cold, winter night? Here's just a few reasons:
1. Popcorn! And you get to watch 4 of the International Speech Contest Finalists as they present their speeches at the Toastmasters International Conference, which was held in Vancouver in August.
2. Plus YOU GET THE BE A JUDGE because......
3. Phyllis Nielsen DTM and Co-Founder of our Club will be presenting an interactive and entertaining Judging workshop. This is an invaluable opportunity for current and future Toastmasters. It is also very timely as we are heading into Speech Contest Season and there is always a demand for Judges.
4. Everyone will have a ballot and, following Phyllis's workshop, you will get to put what you've learned into practice through judging the speakers (without knowing how the Judges at the International Conference cast their votes!
5. You get see how your votes compare to those Judges and to all your other fellow judges.
We would love to have you join us!

Island Excellence Toastmasters is having a special meeting on December 20th to celebrate the holidays before our 2 week winter break. We'll take half of our usual meeting time to provide an entertaining speech or two, host a quick and spirited Table Topics and then enjoy food, seasonal beverages and just visiting with our members and (always welcome) guests and visitors. This past year has been pretty exciting for our young Club (we are only 2 1/2 years old): We were honoured to receive the Outstanding Club Award for District 21; our own Hersh Kalles took 3rd place in both the District 21 Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contest; we had a few members who moved on (and we miss them!) and we've gained some amazing new members as well. We began as a collaboration between Toastmasters and Excellence Seminars International and the values of both these organizations are reflected in everything we do. Of course we would love you to come to our Christmas meeting....but we also welcome you to come to any of our meetings. We're super friendly and have 'FUN' as one of our top values. Happy Holidays to you and hope to see you in the New Year!
I am so proud of this club for all we have accomplished this Toastmasters year and this all culminated in one of the most amazing meetings last night. To start we had 22 people attend, the furthest being Jillian and Rebecca who travel from Gabriola island, along with 8 guests, Marjorie, Jhulliam, Rebecca, Valerie, Pete, Cresswell, Mark (who put in his membership application to join us) and the one and only Ashwani. I’ll get to the meeting in a moment but man oh man did we have tons to celebrate yesterday. First of all we achieved our goal or hitting 25 members this year after sitting at only 8 early in the year. I believe this also means we were able to achieve the “Beat the clock” membership award and then on top of that we achieved all of our DCP goals getting all 10 stars and the golden key to become a Presidents Distinguished Club who will be honoured at the upcoming International Convention in Vancouver in August.
Personal achievements also abound last night as Barbara was awarded with her Competent Communicator award for completing 10 speeches and won best Table Topics. Janice was awarded her competent communicator award as well. Charlotte was awarded her Advanced Leader Bronze and Anne and I were both given our Advanced Communicator Bronze for completing 10 advanced speeches. Ryan was awarded his Ice Breaker ribbon for completing his very first speech and there were other awards for members who weren’t there and whom we will celebrate in the near future
There were too many pictures to add to this email so check out the Facebook album link here (you don’t need Facebook to view). And if you haven’t “Liked” our Island Excellence page you should do that now!
Regardless of whether you are a brand new member or one who has been here since the start, each of you have contributed to Island Excellence achieving these incredible heights of success. I was privileged to be the President of this club, surrounded by a passionate and committed executive team and a wonderfully energetic and dedicated membership who was able to make all this a reality and I know that the new executive taking over in July will continue to exude and execute on the excellence that we’ve come to believe in for our club.
President - Island Excellence Toastmasters 2016/2017
With clubs that spread around the world, it's rare to get the chance to invite the Toastmasters International community into your own backyard but this year the Toastmasters International Convention and World Championships of Public Speaking are being help in Vancouver, BC and WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!
Come help us make this year’s convention a success. Participating in the Helping Hands program is a great way to meet new people, network with your fellow Toastmasters and receive special perks, including a limited edition vest. Visit http://bit.ly/Toastmasters-HelpingHands to learn more.
Public Speaking. A very common fear. It is a fear that many people wish there was a quick fix for. Unfortunately lasting growth or change (in any area of our life) doesn’t happen overnight. And this is definitely true when it comes to becoming a confident and competent speaker. Weekend workshops or short courses that offer training in public speaking can be fun and offer some new learning. However, what then?
Toastmasters offers something unique: the opportunity to learn and practice new skills every week AND the opportunity to receive feedback on both strengths and areas for improvement.
Whether you are a seasoned speaker looking to improve further or you start trembling at the thought of standing at the front of a room and saying anything, Toastmasters offers education, mentorship and ongoing support.
I first walked into a Toastmasters meeting in Victoria, BC in the early 1990’s, my heart already racing when I realized I might be asked simply to introduce myself!! My reason for tackling this challenge was that my fear of public speaking was causing me to turn down some great career opportunities. I am forever grateful that I took that step because, with the support of that Toastmasters group, I was able to develop the skills and confidence to say ‘yes’ to those opportunities.
Fast forward to the present, living in Nanaimo and a member of Island Excellence Toastmasters, I continue to learn and grow. Being the best communicator I can be, whether as a speaker, evaluator, Toastmaster or fulfilling any other meeting role, is an ongoing process. We are a vibrant, growing, energetic Club committed to both learning and FUN!! We would love to have you join us as a guest any Wednesday evening, 7 p.m., at Origin at Longwood in the Theatre Room. 6205 Oliver Road, Nanaimo.
In our crowded and competitive workplaces, public speaking can give you an edge and increase your value to the company you work for. This in turn allows you to command more value and opens up doors and opportunities you didn't know were there before.
